Complying with new federal regulations on licensure program disclosures
While understanding the licensure requirements of 50 states is time-consuming, Insider Higher Education’s portrayal of institutions “grappling” with the new federal regulations on licensure disclosure is a bit surprising. After all, these regulations were about two years in the making from start to finish. Ideally, institutions creating and offering these programs should always have been mindful of licensure requirements in states from which their students enroll.
While many institutions may now be rushing to comply, a number of large online universities have been voluntarily informing their students of state licensure requirements for years. This is an area of work I am particularly proud of doing for years. However, even with diligent work, no institution is going to do this perfectly and regulators should focus on best efforts and practices. Licensure boards change their rules quickly and often with not much public notice. Keeping up is tough. All universities with licensure programs should have dedicated resources (either within their own academic or compliance office or outside) to monitor and keep current with all states from which they enroll students...and students should also take ownership of their professional destiny too - their own awareness of these complexities while they are enrolled and before they graduate is essential too.
